Jira tasks are estimated using Story Points.
Valid story point values are: 0, 1,2,3,5,8,13,20,40,100 (20,40,100 should only be used when estimating epics, if a story is estimated above 13 it should be broken down into multiple stories)
Task estimation is done using Planning Poker.
The process is
-
The Jira task to be estimated is shared, and everyone given a chance to review it.
-
Questions can be asked at this stage, but the solution should not be discussed, or the problem gone into in great depth. If estimation is going slowly, it might be necessary to time box this stage.
-
Everyone (except PO) chooses their point estimation. This can be done using physical planning poker cards, or by using https://www.pointingpoker.com/ . When everyone has chosen, their estimates are revealed
-
Outliers then explain their estimates. People can change their estimates during this stage
-
If there is a consensus (at least everyone, except 1) then that point value is used
-
If there is a split between similar point values (e.g. 5 and 8 ) then the most popular is chosen
-
If there is not an agreement, the ticket can be parked to be estimated later in the session; or if necessary given back to the PO to provide more details in the tickets and estimated in a later session.
-
The agree estimate is entered into the Story Point field on the Jira task.
